What are shock waves?
Shock waves are audible sound waves with very high energy. These sound waves are generated in the shock wave device and transmitted to the body with a water cushion. This therapy method became known through the kidney stone destruction.
Extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT) not only reduces calcification, it is also used for painful tendon attachments and poorly healing bone fractures. For this purpose, the shock waves are focused, ie set millimeter exactly on the area to be treated.
How do shock waves work?
The shock waves generate a very high pressure, which leads to a tension in the tissue, which leads to a biological reaction. The blood circulation is increased, the metabolism improves, the damaged tissue regenerates and heals.
What risks exist?
Shock wave therapy can cause temporary redness of the skin. In rare cases, the symptoms may get worse for a few days. The shock wave therapy itself does not cause radiation exposure.
